Berkshire Group is led by a team of industry veterans with years of real estate industry experience. Their experience spans the spectrum of real estate disciplines within real estate investment management and property operations.
As Chief Executive Officer of Berkshire Group, Mr. Leitner is responsible for leading all aspects of the company’s operations. He is a member of Berkshire’s Board of Directors, the Chairman of the Operating Committee, and serves on the Investment Committee. Previously he served as Chairman and President of the former REIT, Berkshire Income Realty, Inc. He has been with Berkshire since 2013.
Mr. Leitner is an experienced executive, with over three decades in real estate and investment management. Prior to Berkshire Group, Mr. Leitner served as Chairman and CEO of the ULI Greenprint Center for Building Performance and as a member of the advisory board for SVP Global, a hedge fund manager specializing in distressed debt investments. Earlier, Mr. Leitner spent 24 years at RREEF, a global real estate investment management business and a division of Deutsche Asset Management, serving in a variety of roles, including Global Head (Chief Executive Officer) and Chairman. He helped build the firm into one of the leading real estate and alternative asset investment advisors with $80 billion in assets under management. Prior to RREEF, Mr. Leitner held positions in real estate investment and finance with GE Capital in Chicago, and TIAA/CREF in New York. Additionally, he served as a director for Dexus, a listed property trust in Australia, and DB Real Estate Investment GmbH, a German-based manager of global real estate funds. He is a trustee of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) as well as a member and past board director of the Pension Real Estate Association.
Mr. Leitner received a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
Ms. Bloom holds primary responsibility for the coordination and delivery of all legal services to Berkshire and its affiliates, and has oversight of the compliance and risk management functions. She has been with Berkshire for over 15 years, previously serving as Assistant General Counsel from 2000 to 2005.
Prior to joining Berkshire in 2000, Ms. Bloom was an attorney with John Hancock Financial Services.
She received a Bachelor of Arts from the College of the Holy Cross and a Juris Doctorate from New England School of Law. Ms. Bloom is admitted to practice law in Massachusetts and New York.
Mr. Bottomley leads all client relations activities at Berkshire including fund raising and investor relations. He has extensive experience in private equity real estate investment management in both the U.S. and internationally, and has also participated in many public market transactions.
Prior to joining Berkshire, he was Global Head of Capital Markets at Rockefeller Group where he helped launch numerous real estate investment partnerships and made a strategic investment in Europa Capital. He has also been Managing Director at Citi Property Investors where he successfully helped launch three first-time regional opportunity funds, a global real estate securities platform and two multi-manager real estate funds as well as several Citi and Travelers co-sponsored funds. He has served on management and investment committees for many of these investment vehicles.
Mr. Bottomley received a Bachelor of Arts with honors in Economics from York University, Toronto and a Master of Arts in Urban Planning and Regional Economics from the University of Waterloo, Canada.
Ms. Boujoulian oversees Berkshire Group’s Multifamily Development Investments group.
Ms. Boujoulian joined Berkshire in 2012, bringing extensive multifamily development experience after serving as Vice President at Criterion Development Partners where she oversaw all aspects of multi-family development in New England from 2004-2012. Prior to Criterion Development Partners, Ms. Boujoulian worked for JPI from 1999-2004, holding several different positions during her tenure for both the construction and development divisions of the company. Collectively, she has managed design development and feasibility of more than 4,000 luxury apartment units throughout New England.
Ms. Boujoulian holds a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Roger Williams University, where she continues to be actively involved in the Alumni Executive Council and the Construction Management Professional Advisory Board. Following undergraduate studies, Ms. Boujoulian attended the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where she received a Master in Urban Planning degree.
Mr. Coffey is responsible for client relations activities at Berkshire including capital raising and investor relations.
Prior to joining Berkshire, he was a Vice President at Greenhill & Co. in the firm’s Capital Advisory Group and was actively involved in raising institutional capital for a range of real estate investment strategies. He previously held positions in the Commercial Real Estate Finance Group at Guggenheim Partners and at Credit Suisse where he was a member of both the Real Estate Private Fund Group and the Real Estate Finance and Securitization Group.
Mr. Coffey received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College.
Mr. Daly is a Portfolio Manager for Berkshire, with primary responsibility for overseeing investments for the firm’s separate account client portfolios. He joined Berkshire in 2010 and previously was responsible for acquisitions in the Metro New York and Mid-Atlantic regions.
Prior to Berkshire he was Managing Director at JPMorgan Asset Management, managing an acquisitions team covering the Northern New Jersey and Mid-Atlantic regions, and was responsible for the sourcing, negotiating, and closing of all asset classes and all risk classes ranging from core to opportunistic. During his tenure, he was responsible for closing investments valued at $4.7 billion in gross asset value. Prior to JPMorgan he was an Associate Broker with Grubb & Ellis of Metropolitan Washington, D.C.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Bates College.
Mr. Dent is Managing Director, Portfolio Manager for Berkshire Group. Since joining the Company in 2007, he has been responsible for asset and portfolio management of 50 properties and over 15,000 units in five different portfolios, and has been involved in over $2 billion in acquisitions, dispositions and developments.
Mr. Dent has 30 years of real estate and finance experience, including 23 years in multifamily. Before joining Berkshire, Mr. Dent served as Chief Executive Officer of Sagebrush Capital Holdings, and as President of Village Green Management Company, in which he oversaw 30,000 multifamily units. He has also held senior roles at JPI Partners, LLC and Insignia Financial Group.
Mr. Dent received a Bachelor of Science from Washington and Lee University. He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Multifamily Housing Council and on the Board of Directors of the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Apartment Association.
Mr. Doherty has primary responsibility for portfolio accounting, investor reporting, investment valuation, and portfolio modeling as well as fund and investor administration. In this capacity, he oversees Berkshire fund controllers. With Berkshire for nearly 20 years, he previously oversaw accounting and financial reporting for Berkshire Realty Company, Inc. and Berkshire Realty Holdings, L.P. and also served as Assistant Controller and Controller for Berkshire’s affiliated entities.
Prior to joining Berkshire, Mr. Doherty served as a Senior Associate at Coopers & Lybrand, LLP (now known as PwC, LLP), where he specialized in the real estate and investment industries.
He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant.
As Head of Multifamily Equity & Debt Investments, Mr. Draeger oversees Berkshire's multifamily acquisitions, dispositions and debt capital markets teams. He has been with the Company since 2010.
Mr. Draeger has nearly two decades of experience in the multifamily real estate business. He previously spent fourteen years with Berkshire Mortgage Finance, L.P., a former affiliate of Berkshire, and its successor, Deutsche Bank Berkshire Mortgage, in several roles culminating with Chief Credit Officer for the latter.
Mr. Draeger holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Northwestern University.
Mr. Ellman is responsible for executing and directing Berkshire Venture Investments with oversight of investment and portfolio management activities, managing the organization and investor relationships.
He has over two decades of experience in real estate investment in numerous sectors across U.S. markets including debt, entity-level, joint ventures and direct acquisitions. Prior to joining Berkshire, Mr. Ellman was Managing Director and the Head of Citigroup’s $600 million institutional North American real estate opportunity fund where he was responsible for overseeing investment and fund management activities. He previously was Managing Director at J.P. Morgan Real Estate, where he led a team responsible for $7 billion of diversified investment activity. Earlier, he held positions with the J.W. O'Connor Group and Jones Lang Wootton.
Mr. Ellman holds a Master of Science in Real Estate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the Pension Real Estate Association, and a board member of The Urban Dove.
Mr. Fleniken is responsible for the acquisition of multifamily properties for Berkshire in the Southern, Central and Southwest regions of the U.S. He joined Berkshire in 2003, previously holding responsibility for acquisition activity in the Western and Southeastern U.S.
Mr. Fleniken has nearly two decades of experience in real estate, and has closed in excess $1.6 billion in multifamily assets. Prior to joining Berkshire, he held roles in acquisitions for Anvil Investments, and Walden Residential Properties, overseeing the sourcing, negotiating, and closing of real estate assets.
Mr. Fleniken holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Mr. Gates is responsible for client relations activities at Berkshire including capital raising and investor relations.
Prior to joining Berkshire, he was a Director at Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management in the firm’s Investor Relations group where he served as a Real Estate Product Specialist and was actively involved in raising institutional capital for a range of real estate investment strategies. He previously was a Market Principal for the Western United States for Greystar Real Estate Partners and a Structured Finance Capital Advisory Team Leader at Buchanan Street Partners.
Mr. Gates received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Georgia. He is a member of PREA and The Urban Land Institute.
Mr. Grossman is Managing Director, Venture Investments with responsibility for sourcing, underwriting, structuring and managing investments for the platform.
Mr. Grossman has 20 years of real estate investment experience across multiple property types, including entity entity-level investments in private operating companies. During his career, Mr. Grossman has closed over $700 million of transactions, including the acquisition of 2 million square feet of office properties and over 6,000 multifamily units. He was previously Director at Citi Property Investors for six years, and was responsible for direct real estate investments on behalf of CPI's $600 million North American opportunity fund. Mr. Grossman joined Citigroup after seven years with O'Connor Capital Partners, where he served as a Vice President responsible for investment and asset management activities for several of O'Connor's U.S. opportunity funds. Prior to joining O'Connor in 1997, he spent three years held roles at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s in its bank supervision department.
Mr. Grossman received a Master of Business Administration, with distinction, from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute.
Mr. King serves as President of Berkshire Communities, Berkshire Group’s Property Management Division, overseeing approximately 600 property management professionals in over 20 markets. He previously served as Divisional Vice President for the Western Division of Berkshire.
He has over three decades of experience in multifamily property management. His extensive experience includes renovation, expansion and repositioning of both residential and commercial real estate assets. Prior to joining Berkshire, Mr. King was Regional Director of Operations for Archon Residential, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Goldman Sachs. He also previously held senior property management positions with McNeil Real Estate, and Johnstown Properties.
Mr. King is a Certified Property Manager, and has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Finance from the University of Florida. He is a Past President of the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas and currently serves on the Executive Committee of the National Multifamily Housing Council. Mr. King also serves as Chairman of the Legislative Committee for the National Apartment Association and is a member of their Executive Committee.
Mr. Medearis is a responsible for underwriting, due diligence and management of acquisitions for platform Berkshire affiliates.
Mr. Medearis has over 10 years of experience in institutional real estate and securities across multiple property types and investment structures. Prior to joining Berkshire, he was a Vice President at Citi Property Investors (CPI) and was primarily responsible for execution and management of investments while based in CPI's New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong offices. Prior to CPI, Mr. Medearis was an Acquisitions Associate at Lehman Brothers Real Estate Partners, where he participated in numerous equity and mezzanine transactions across a wide range of asset classes. Mr. Medearis began his career as an Investment Banking Analyst in Salomon Smith Barney's Real Estate & Lodging Group, where he was involved in capital markets and advisory assignments for REITs, hotel operators, and private real estate platforms.
Mr. Medearis received his Bachelor of Arts., with honors and distinction, in Ethics, Politics, and Economics from Yale University, and his Master of Business Administration from Duke University's Executive Cross Continent Program, where he was named a Fuqua Scholar. Mr. Medearis is also a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst, and a member of the Urban Land Institute.
Brian T. Murdy oversees Portfolio Management, Economic & Market Research, and Portfolio Performance Reporting for Berkshire Group. Mr. Murdy has over 30 years of commercial real estate industry experience with extensive multifamily experience.
Prior to joining Berkshire, Mr. Murdy was Senior Vice President/National Director for Institutional Property Advisors’ Multifamily, Student Housing and Healthcare Groups and the National Seniors Housing Group of Marcus & Millichap.
He previously served as Portfolio Manager of Barings Real Estate Advisers (previously, Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers) from 1999 until 2012 and managed its flagship core open-end fund. Mr. Murdy raised and deployed over $2.5 billion of capital and established strong relationships with state, county and city pension funds, off-shore investors, insurance companies, foundations and endowments. He was also the Portfolio Manager for two apartment development funds and two separate accounts. In addition, he was responsible for overseeing the debt strategies on Barings’ entire equity portfolio for 11 years.
Prior to joining Barings, Mr. Murdy was a Director and Portfolio Manager for TH Real Estate (previously, Henderson Global Investors), where he managed three apartment funds, two public and two private syndications, as well as Phoenix Home Life’s real estate equity and mortgage loan portfolios. He also has experience as an auditor with KPMG.
Mr. Murdy is a board member of the National Multi-Housing Council (NMHC), a member of the Pension Real Estate Association, the Multifamily Council (Bronze Flight) of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He graduated magna cum laude from Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
In his position, Mr. Nechayev leads the development of original real estate research at Berkshire Group. He joined the firm in December 2014.
Mr. Nechayev is a recognized real estate economist specializing in multifamily markets, with nearly two decades of industry experience counseling institutional and private clients. Prior to joining Berkshire, he was Senior Managing Economist for CBRE Econometric Advisors (formerly Torto Wheaton Research), where he provided expert economic outlook in the multifamily, retail and hotel property sectors. Previously, Mr. Nechayev held senior research positions with Lend Lease Real Estate Investments, and KAI Technologies.
He holds a Masters in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is a graduate of the National Economic University of Kiev, Ukraine. Mr. Nechayev is a member of both the Urban Land Institute and National Multifamily Housing Council.
Mr. Nichols serves as the Chief Operating and Administrative Officer at Berkshire Group, overseeing corporate accounting, tax, internal audit, information technology and human resources. He has been with the Company since 1999, having previously served as Corporate Controller and Accounting Officer.
Prior to joining Berkshire, Mr. Nichols served as Accounting Manager and then as the Corporate Controller for Mac–Gray Corporation, previously, a NYSE-listed company. He also previously held the role of Senior Staff Auditor for Mullen & Company.
Mr. Nichols earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from Bentley College, holds Associate degrees in Computer Information Systems and Electrical Engineering and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Mr. Olney is the Multifamily Chief Investment Officer and leader of Berkshire's Multifamily Investments group. He oversees multifamily equity, debt and development investments, as well as drives investment strategy and transaction execution.
He has nearly three decades of real estate experience having joined Berkshire in 1986, and since 1990, has been involved in approximately $8.0 billion of acquisitions and dispositions. From 1999 until its liquidation in 2004, Mr. Olney served as President of Berkshire Realty Holdings, L.P., a joint venture partnership with affiliates of The Blackstone Group and Goldman Sachs. Prior to joining Berkshire in 1986, Mr. Olney worked in a financial management program with Sanders Associates in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Mr. Olney received a BS from Bryant College and an MBA from Babson College. He currently serves as an executive board member of the National Multifamily Housing Council.
Mr. Parthum is Portfolio Manager for Berkshire’s value-add, commingled fund series where he is responsible for overall portfolio construction, risk management and fund performance. During his 30+ year tenure with Berkshire Group, he has participated in the sale of approximately $3 billion of real estate. Prior to his current role, Mr. Parthum was a senior member of Berkshire’s portfolio management team and has had numerous supervisory and managerial positions within the Portfolio Performance Reporting and Multifamily Property Operations groups. Mr. Parthum holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northeastern University.
Mr. Reny oversees project management of Berkshire’s committed developments from pre-development, to construction and stabilization. He joined the Company in 2008.
Mr. Reny has over 30 years of experience in development, design, and construction, and is a civil engineer by training, with broad development experience in the residential, commercial, biotech, and resort sectors. He has been associated with some of the Northeast's most impressive real estate projects including the Delaware North's TD North Garden, and Forest City's University Park at MIT. Prior to joining Berkshire, Mr. Reny served as Director of Development and Construction for Cabot, Cabot & Forbes, Inc., and also held positions at Samuels and Associates, and Perini Corporation.
Mr. Reny received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of New Hampshire.
Mr. Rucker serves as Senior Vice President for Berkshire Communities, the Property Management Division of Berkshire Group. He is responsible for the overall property management, revenue and expense management, marketing, training, asset preservation, and recruiting in markets in the Eastern U.S.
Before joining Berkshire, Mr. Rucker served as Vice President and Managing Director of Real Estate for Sawyer Realty Holdings, LLC, where he managed more than 30,000 units and was responsible for marketing, risk management and property operations. He previously served as Operations Manager and Project Manager for Charles E. Smith Realty.
Prior to entering the real estate industry, Mr. Rucker spent eight years in the United States Navy. Mr. Rucker holds a Certified Apartment Manager designation from the National Apartment Association, and is a Certified Property Manager candidate with The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM). He also holds a board at large position for the Property Management Association and is an active member of the Apartment and Office Building Association in Washington D.C., The Maryland Multi Housing Association, and the local IREM chapter.
Ms. Santulli leads strategic planning, new business development and product development initiatives for Berkshire Group, with oversight over economic and market research and corporate communications.
She has approximately 25 years of experience in real estate investment management, development and consulting, with 18 years of principal institutional investing experience. Ms. Santulli has experience in major domestic and select international markets and has acquired approximately $3.7 billion of a variety of property types. Prior to Berkshire, she was Managing Director for The Congress Group, Inc., overseeing the company’s acquisitions and dispositions group. Ms. Santulli also held senior real estate investment positions at AEW Capital Management, Fidelity Investments, and Broadview Investors focusing on acquisitions of core, core plus, value add, and opportunistic real estate equity and debt investments. Earlier in her career, Ms. Santulli worked for Coopers & Lybrand (now PwC), and Laventhol & Horwath in their real estate advisory services practices.
She holds a Master of Business Administration from The University of Chicago, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science from Duke University. She is a Council Member of the Urban Land Institute and member of the Pension Real Estate Association.
Mr. Schrumpf is responsible for the acquisition of multifamily properties for Berkshire Group in the Western region of the U.S. He joined the company in 2012 to open the firm’s San Francisco office. Previously, he was a Vice President with Pacific Urban Residential (formerly Pacific Property Company), a Marcus and Millichap subsidiary company and one of the leading private multifamily investors in the West, where he was responsible for the firm’s Northern California transaction activity of existing multifamily assets. During his eight-year tenure with Pacific, he was responsible for the acquisition and disposition of multifamily properties on behalf of the firm’s own account and on behalf of a stable of institutional investment partners including J.P. Morgan, BlackRock, Capmark, and Capri Capital.
Mr. Schrumpf’s career started with the investment banking firm J.P. Morgan in New York and includes more than a decade of dedicated multifamily investment experience during which he has closed in excess of $1.2 billion in multifamily assets. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University and a Master of Business Administration from the Haas School of Business at U.C. Berkeley.
Mr. Sevieri has primary responsibility for arranging multifamily debt financing and managing lender relations for Berkshire. Having joined the Company in 1987, he has held several positions in financial analysis and reporting, asset management, treasury, and mortgage backed securities.
Previously, Mr. Sevieri was a fixed income trading analyst at Kidder, Peabody & Co., and a money market mutual fund analyst at the Putnam Companies.
Mr. Sevieri received an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts.
Ms. Watson serves as Senior Vice President for Berkshire Communities, the Property Management Division of Berkshire Group. She is responsible for the overall property management, revenue and expense management, marketing, training, asset preservation, and recruiting in for markets in the Western U.S.
In total, Ms. Watson has over 20 years of multifamily experience in operations, training and asset management. Prior to joining Berkshire, Ms. Watson served as Vice President of Asset Management for McDowell Properties, where she monitored and coordinated the activities of third-party management companies for over 19,000 units, and assisted in the closing of over $1.5 billion in transactions, including a $205 million bond purchase. She also previously held senior roles at CNC Investments, and Equity Residential.
Ms. Watson served on the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas Board of Directors from 2008-2013, holds a Certified Property Manager designation through the Institute of Real Estate Management, and is a Certified Commercial Investment Member.
